Adventure 2 - Week in Honolulu, Hawaii
3-June-2002
Aloha Video

The first week of my adventure was spent in Honolulu, Hawaii where every day featured beautiful, sunny weather. The hostel I was staying in was only 1 minute from the beach which helped me remove my computer-geek white complexion. On first inspection, the beaches looked great (nearly as good as some of Australias) although after a while, you realise there's a number of fake elements about them. Don't expect to run out into the water Iron-Man style without getting damaged feet. It didn't bother me that much as I spent most of the time in deeper water or reading under the shade of a palm tree.

It's only been 9 days since leaving Brisbane and I've already seen many different places and have made some very interesting friends.

One sunny day in Hawaii, 3 blokes- an American (Jesse), and Australian (me) and an Irishmen (Michael) decided to hike up "Diamond Head", an extinct volcanoe, previously used as a military base and now open to the public.

The hike was exhausting, yet the view was amazing as shown in some of the photos.

Later that afternoon Michael, the Irishman who sounds funny when he talks (Like all Irishmen are supposed to sound) had a bowel movement related to a problem which took away his right to defacate for 2 weeks. Cutting a long story short, Michael's unpleasant constipation was suddenly cured as he continued to knock on the bathroom door untill the unsuspecting pommy girl hurridly left. 10mins and many groans later, Michael returned in a cold sweat announcing "Ah joost doomped tooo weeks of crap, and ah think I broke the toooilet"

Yes, Michael had indeed broken the toilet. Luckily, after making an urgent SOS call to reception, our situaton was resolved. As for our friend Michael, he is now making his way back to Ireland. Poor bugger.

Speaking of the bathroom, Hawaii doesn't seem to be concerned with water conservation. As you turn on the tap to take a shower, not only does the water spray out of the shower nozel, but it also comes pouring out of the "forcet" for the bath. Also, their toilet bowls are nearly filled to the rim with water, flushing away with even the tiniest amount of piss.

Other Facts:

  • Leaving Hawaii, I had $40US cash to waste at the airport so I bought a bottle of alcohol, batteries, magazines and what they call a "KING SIZE MEAL DEAL" from Burger King. Costing just over $15 Australian, It's chips were huge and the cup was slightly more than one litre. Unbelievable.
  • I won a frisby at a movie night at the beach. Frisbies were thrown off the stage. After chasing one, and hustling with some little kids, it landed on my beach towel on which I quickly pounced.
  • Pool Table... The American (Jesse) and myself can beat the local "crew" in Hawaii 4 times out of 5 at the pool table, even under their "rulez".
  • Waikiki Beach (where I stayed) reminded me a bit of Surfers Paradise Due to the many resorts lining the coast.
  • There are 8 beds per room and a slight movement in the bottom bed causes the top bed to sway.
